Greece is a popular destination, and has numerous islands with one of the best beaches in Europe. Here is a list of the 5 top islands to visit in Greece.

Santorini

Santorini is a very popular destination in Greece.

Many magazines and travel sites rank it as the world’s top island. It is situated in Southern Greece, and about 290km from Athens.

It is a part of a circular archipelago and is the largest island in it. Since, it has more than ten beaches, including a nude one; you can enjoy the variety of white, red and black sand. If you are lucky enough to go there, try some of the local specialties like: Santorinio Sfougato, Tsounisti or Melitinia.

Also taste the local wine Vinstanto, while watching the sunset.

Zakynthos

Zakynthos, also called Zante, is an island situated west of Greece, about 320km from Athens. It is the third largest island in the Ionian Sea.

The island has so much to offer, from small quiet villages, to bigger towns with a rich nightlife. It has some of the finest beaches in Greece. But, if you don’t want to relax all day, there are a lot of stuff to do, such as snorkeling, scuba diving, surfing and more.

Navagio, or Shipwreck beach, is located on the north-west shore of the island, and is one the most famous beaches in Greece. Its white sand, crystal clear water and the remains of an old ship, make it so desirable. Sadly, you can go there only by boat.

Lefkada

Lefkada is also situated off the west cost of Greece, in the Ionian Sea. However, it is connected to the mainland by a floating bridge and a causeway.

It is about 385km away from Athens. The island has one of the best beaches in the Mediterranean Sea. Except a fine white sand, and breathtaking turquoise water, you will find taverns, restaurants and cafes, on some of the beaches.

There are a lot of things to do on the island. You can engage in sports, go shopping, hiking or sailing.

Mikonos

Mikonos is a part of the Cyclades and is situated in the Southern Aegean Sea, about 175km from Athens.

It has won the nickname – the island of the winds. But, don’t get fooled! When you are there during the summer, and it is 100ºF outside, you would pray for a puff of the wind.

Capri of Greece, is another nickname of the islands, and comes from the fact that it has numerous beaches, which makes it a good place for relaxation and sun-bathing. Since, Mykonos is also called the Ibiza of Greece, it is a hot spot for party lovers. It has a lot of clubs, taverns and restaurants.

Crete

Crete is the largest, most populous and popular island in Greece. It attracts millions of tourist per year, and you won’t make a mistake, if you choose it for your next vacation.

Since, once it was the center of the Minoan civilization, this is the best place for people who would like to learn more about its rich history.

Crete has many archeological sites and museums. It has a unique flora and fauna, mainly because of its mild climate and location. There are a lot of hotels, clubs, restaurants and beaches on the island. The opportunities for different activities are numerous.
